Just because the majority hold a certain view point, that doesn’t mean that it is necessarily right. In fact from a biblical perspective it is quite possibly wrong. While the majority head for a Christ-less eternity along the “highway to hell”, it is good to be reminded from scripture that it is a narrow path we seek and there are few that will find it.
Mat 7:13-14 NIV84 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. (14) But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord, in a wicked generation:
Gen 6:5 NIV84 The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.
He found favour, not because he went with the flow, followed the crowd, went along with the majority. No, he found favour because he was different among his generation and walked with God:
Gen 6:9 NIV84 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.
He would have faced mocking and persecution for what he believed, but he was right, and the majority was wrong. The majority were living in wickedness right up to the flood.
Noah was a lone voice; it is OK to be that lone voice. People may mock and criticise you as much as they like, but remember is was only Noah and his family who were saved on the entire earth. God is not afraid to judge the majority; He is not swayed by popular opinion. His word stands true and God will judge again.
Mat 24:37-39 NIV84 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. (38) For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; (39) and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.
Here is another minority example. Moses sent twelve spies to check out the promised land. When they returned, only two men were in favour of entering the promised land – Joshua and Caleb. Two versus ten…and was the majority opinion the correct one? No!
Num 14:30 NIV84 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
I will offer one final example of the minority position being correct, and it is once again from the Old Testament. There is so much to learn from this passage. The prophet Elijah went up against 450 false prophets. Yes at 450:1 you could satisfactorily conclude that his was a minority position! You can read the account yourself in 1 Kings 18. Suffice to say that God acted in response to the call of one man and not 450 false prophets of Baal!
1Ki 18:37-39 NIV84 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” (38) Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. (39) When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”
What a tragedy that we see people falling over themselves to unite with the false prophets in an ecumenical movement founded on the “wisdom” of man, rather than the statutes of God…but I will save that for another blog…
