One of the scriptures that really challenges me is this passage from the book of Matthew:
Mat 7:21-23 NKJV “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. (22) Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ (23) And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
It bothers me because these people who stand before the Lord genuinely believe they are saved, they are active in their “ministry”…and yet Jesus says he never knew them. To hear those words on the wrong side of eternity would be devastating. There would be no chance for repentance; judgment is passed and you have been condemned…eternally.
It brings us to a challenging place…and it best done sooner rather than later. We have an opportunity right now to examine our own faith. Are you genuinely saved? What is the evidence of that? What assurance do you have?
2Co 13:5 NIV84 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
